Would your business survive a serious flood?
Coastal and river flooding are the most talked about events, but with an unfamiliar climate and some of the wettest periods in history, groundwater, surface and man-made flooding now represent an equal risk even in areas previously thought dry such as Sheffield and Aberdeen. Even if you are not within the flood area itself, downstream damage to the infrastructure could still affect your business.
According to the Pitt Report in 2008, there are 956 “large” raised reservoirs which pose a risk to 3.5m people as well as 800 schools and colleges. For example, when the previously low category Ulley Reservoir breached in June 2007, the M1 was closed for 40 hours, a high-pressure gas mains had its pressure reduced, an air exclusion zone was established and livelihoods were disrupted. Similarly, there are many dams in the UK, a large number of which date back to Victorian times, and risk of over-topping or pressure breaches is higher than ever before.
With many more areas now at risk, and the current alert systems only available to domestic households, you need to know if your business premises, or those of your key customers and suppliers, are vulnerable.
